Airport Companion App - Take Flight
For this project were tasked with creating an app based on helping user alleviate long layover times and help them get better acclimated with an unfamiliar airport. This project was also created during the COVID-19 and also plays a part in the exploration of my design. With all these factors in mind, I approached this design knowing that this app had to reflect the current times it was designed in.
Step 1: Research
To begin my research I started by casting a wide net. Since the basis for many airplane apps were similar I started my research there. I started by looking what was currently available and trying to find out what are similar patterns in all their designs.
These were most popular airline apps in the US.
Some pros and cons
After doing research on apps, I conducted my user research.
After taking user research I let that inform my research, personas and user journey maps.
After conducting my research, I found these key insights:
Some of the first things people do when they leave the airplane is recheck their travel documents.
And when in an airport the device they use the most is a their cellular device.
When in an unfamiliar airport, many people would rather stay inside the airport than explore outside during a layover.
When looking for help, people would rather find someone in person than go and find the answers online.
Step 2: Ideation and Design
With all these factors in mind I proceeded to creating my sketches, wireframes as well as creating personas for potential users.
For the Position board I wanted to focus on the ease of use and friendly aesthetic.
